  • Founded in 1847, The City College of New York (CCNY) is a comprehensive teaching, research, and service institution dedicated to accessibility and excellence in undergraduate and graduate education. It is the oldest college of the City University of New York.

    Located on a 35-acre campus in the Hamilton Heights section of Harlem, the College consists of a College of Liberal Arts and Science, the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership and four professional schools: The Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture, the City College School of Education, the Grove School of Engineering and the Sophie School of Biomedical Education, which offers a unique seven-year BS/MD program. . In addition, CCNY is one of seven CUNY campuses in the Macaulay Honors College

    Collectively, CCNY’s schools and divisions offer 73 undergraduate majors and 50 masters programs, of which 10 are interdisciplinary. In addition, CCNY grants Ph.D.s in biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering; and in biology, biochemistry, chemistry and physics, jointly with the CUNY Graduate Center.

    City College is home to 20 research institutes in the sciences, engineering and social sciences. They are engaged in ongoing investigations in such areas as nanoscience, photonics, alternative energy, water resources, transportation and public policy. For 2014-15, funded research programs at the college totaled $56 million.

    Approximately 16,000 students are enrolled at City College, of whom approximately 80 percent are undergraduates. The College is ranked by “U.S. News & World Report’s America’s Best Colleges” number one in diversity among masters-level universities where Hispanics are the largest ethnic group.

    Eighty-seven percent of the College’s more than 550 full-time faculty members hold members hold PhDs or terminal degrees in their fields. They include Fulbright scholars, Guggenheim fellows, MacArthur “Genius” Grant recipients and winners of the Pulitzer Prize, Emmy Awards, GRAMMY Awards and National Book Awards

    Notable alumni of City College include: John O’Keefe, ’63, 2014 Nobel laureate Medicine; Gen. Colin L. Powell, USA (ret.), ’58; Intel Corp. Co-Founder Dr. Andrew S. Grove, ’60; painter, quilter and author Faith Ringgold, ’55, and Dr. Jonas E. Salk, ’34, who developed the first polio vaccine. In addition, ten City College graduates are Nobel laureates, the most among public colleges and universities in the United States.

International Student Housing Options

  • The Towers at CCNY is the first residence hall to be built on the CCNY campus in its 164-year history. The Towers, located on the corner of West 130th Street and St. Nicholas Terrace on the South Campus, opened its door in August 2006. Currently, The Towers provides accommodations for 589 residents.

  • The Towers consists of 164 fully-furnished, air-conditioned suites in four configurations:

  • one-bedroom, one-bathroom suite (2 residents per bedroom)

  • two-bedroom, one-bathroom suite (2 residents per bedroom)

Student Activities and Campus Life

  • The majority of the students commute to the City College campus and live in the larger metropolitan area of New York City; they come from many different states across the U.S. and over one hundred different countries. Over eighty languages can be heard on campus, making CCNY a place both cosmopolitan and international.

    Student activities at CCNY fall under the umbrella of the Office of Student Life and Leadership Development, which provides support for more than one hundred student clubs and organizations and 15 varsity teams that compete in NCAA Division III. Included are the undergraduate and graduate student governments, two student newspapers, a yearbook, and a stu­dent-run radio station. Clubs reflect many of the academic, recreational, religious, political, professional and ethnic interests of CCNY’s students. City College students benefit from the many cultural and educational treasures of New York City.
